Jo Thorne is a Bristol-based multi-disciplinary artist working primarily in semi-abstract oil painting, with a growing body of sculptural work in wax, found objects and mixed media.
Her paintings are rooted in the botanical world but reach toward something wilder — myth, memory, and the luminous territory between the real and the imagined. Working spontaneously and often to music, Jo uses colour, expressive mark-making and an obsession with light to move a painting from darkness toward something glowing and alive. She describes her internal creative space as the Nightgarden: a place she travels to, carrying both the weight of the world and the beauty of the natural world, and working through one with the other.
Her sculptural practice extends this alchemical instinct into three dimensions, using salvaged materials — deconstructed garments, beeswax, rust, ash and found objects — to explore themes of transformation, feminine myth and the redemptive power of making.
