Fernando Asian Spanish, b. 1951

Painting

My favourite medium is oil, whether on canvas, paper, wood or board. Influenced by the intense tropical colour and imagery that surrounded me, I portray a surrealistic vision of life.

Drawing

Is the form of visual art that I have studied and practiced the most. As a teenager I was part of the famous Spanish school of comic writers and illustrators. My ‘plumilla’ pen and ink drawing has given me the most recognition from art critics and fellow artists.

Sculpture

For me, sculpture is a form of multi-dimensional drawing. In 1988 I was commissioned to make a 21-metre sculpture in stainless steel called ‘El Sol. The monumental sculpture was the commemorative cauldron of the XVIII Central American and Caribbean Games.

Tapestry

In 1989 I was one of a group of 23 artists living in Venezuela who was invited to submit designs for tapestries that were to be made by natives from the remote WAYUU ethnic tribe.

Digital art

More recently Fernando was appointed Professor in the Faculty of Art at Maracaibo’s Zulia University where he taught drawing.  He then established a ‘Salón de Arte Digital de Maracaibo’ running a series of ten digital exhibitions of  2D, 3D, animation, video art and the use of the new technologies.
