SOUTH WEST ACADEMY SPRING EXHIBITION

  • South West Academy Spring Exhibition

    19 MARCH – 30 APRIL 2021
  • Introduction

Each year we invite a small number of Academicians from the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Art, the region's leading association for fine art practitioners, to take part in our annual Spring Exhibition. It is always a highlight of our exhibition calendar and this year is no exception, especially as we will be able to open our doors on April 12th and welcome visitors to come and see the collection in person.  We can't wait!

This year’s exhibition presents a truly impressive collection of work. From the striking, bold colours of Jo Dixon and Geoff Shillito, to the atmospheric landscapes of David Norman and Judith Cummings, from the expressive abstracts of Zoe Hyde and Sam Boughton, and the gentle floral still lifes of Ken Cosgrove and Adrian Parnell, to the characterful farm buildings of Phil Creek and Philip Clayton, all beautifully enhanced by the glorious ceramics of Laurel Keeley. This is a superbly curated exhibition, showcasing the finest art in the South West.  We hope you enjoy it!

"My work explores the people, places, landscapes and seascapes of the southwest of England, Europe and the East Coast of America. I often paint en plein air, on the beach or in the landscape, while undertaking more considered works in gouache, oil and larger acrylic paintings in my studio."

"I am an expressive painter who creates semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by my surroundings here in the South West. I am fascinated by the way light, weather and seasons constantly change our environment. My process begins outdoors with location studies in sketch books in which I use inks to capture the movement and energy of the moment and my emotional reaction to it. Back in the studio, I use these studies as a spring board for larger pieces. Using a combination of acrylic, emulsion and pastels I physically pour, drip and splash the paint adding expressive marks which bring contrast, energy and depth to the final piece."

"For this Abandoned series I worked outside responding to the changing light capturing the buildings that surround my studio. These broken buildings were at one point someone’s home though they have been unoccupied for over 60 years. The openings – the doors and windows, or what remains of them, allow you venture into the space beyond and sense their past. The broken-down composition allows the viewer to seek and discover the painting, making their own personal journey, much as I discovered mine in their creation."

"But what then is the value of the finished product? Maybe the value was in the journey, not the destination and the end expression is just the footprint. I have great respect for the artists in history who influence my work — Hals, Rubens, Rembrandt. Yet I am equally influenced by contemporary artists who question disciplines of the past. Kline, Duchamp, Bacon. It is not the subject matter they paint that interests me but the intensity, the emotion, they render in their work. I find myself working to express that same emotion, joy or grief, in the quality of a fine charcoal line or the sweep of a full brush. It has never seemed important to deliver answers, only to ask questions and to contribute to the conversation."

"My work is fuelled by an emotional response to place, to memory, and elements found in the natural world. Life and art are interwoven. Echoes from the past, clouded by time, awakened, half remembered, finding freedom to roam over the canvas. Colour excites me, used intuitively with shape and texture. I enjoy the sense of discovery, concealing and revealing the imagery within the paint. The sea is close by and always an inspiration."
