Cornish Folklore tells of sea spirit mermen coming to shore to inhabit the coastal communities during stormy weather. Legend suggests that Bucca was once a human prince who was cursed by a witch. He helped local fishermen by driving fish towards their nets, and in return, the fishermen would leave fish on the beach to placate him. Bucca retains human traits – he loved children and helped honest fishermen. When insulted or ignored, he retaliated harshly. He embodies the power and unpredictability of the sea itself. His presence was most often felt during storms, It is said that the South West Gales were sometimes called ‘Bucca’s Breath’ or ‘Bucca calling’ as if the spirit was voicing his anger through the wind. Bucca reminds us humans to respect and to look after our seas, our planet – it is bigger than us.
